Maintaining Quality Services by Committing to Exceptional Training

July 31, 2020

Flexibility, agility, and the ability to respond to the unknown are virtues that become increasingly essential in the world of clinical trials. Companies can struggle to equip their employees with the necessary tools to confront the unexpected and take changes in stride. At CTI, we find one of the major ways we can equip our team to handle surprise situations is by providing consistent training.

Often, training is seen as a task to be completed at the beginning of an employees’ career, checked off the list, and never addressed again. At CTI we encourage our team to receive training in a variety of subjects yearly, throughout their career. We have found that consistent training and education not only enhances and refreshes current knowledge, it also encourages curiosity, habits of continuous learning, enhanced communication between departments and teams, and an openness to new ideas  - all of which are crucial to staying agile in our rapidly-changing industry.

Dedicated Resources for Learning

Providing a solid infrastructure for learning is the first step to fostering a culture that values continuous education. At CTI, we have an entire department dedicated to developing, coordinating, enabling, and tracking training. The CTI Training and Development department coordinates with both internal experts and outside thought-leaders to construct programs that benefit our workforce,
including on-boarding, department specific, or company-wide
refresher trainings.

To conduct these various trainings, CTI utilizes a Learning Management System (LMS) for regulated employees as well as a program called CTI University for both regulated an non-regulated employees.  These platforms allow us to provide our employees around the world with access to every training the company has ever provided, regardless of their position or geographic location.

Agile Resources

Having the infrastructure described above in place allowed our Training & Development team to quickly redirect their 2020 plans in March, pivoting to address the needs of the fight against COVID-19. An immediate need arose to educate our workforce quickly and thoroughly on a constantly-changing topic. Internal experts gave weekly informal updates as well as a series of formal trainings to keep our team up-to-date as the information at hand changed and improved. You can watch some of these trainings by clicking on the links below:
In a typical year, the CTI team averages 100 hours of training per employee. With the changing landscape, some employees had more availability once the pandemic started affecting trials the ability to monitor on-site. CTI encouraged employees to spend any extra time attending trainings during this period, and between COVID-specific and other relevant trainings, CTI employees have logged more than 30,000 hours of training since 1, March 2020.

Listening to the Needs of Our Team

You cannot meet the needs of your team if you do not listen to what those needs are. At CTI, every employee has the opportunity to influence their own learning as well as the training of their peers. coworkers' learning.  Every year, the Training & Development department sends out a survey to gather team members' thoughts on what they learned in the past year and what they would like to learn more about in the future. We find these insights invaluable as we work to continuously improve our training programs.

The Year of Hope

CTI Cares - Providing Hope to our Communities
The CTI Cares program was established in response to the great interest of our employees who want to give back to society, and in part due to the prior success we’ve had in charitable giving programs.  Each month, one or more employee-nominated charities is spotlighted and supported by our employees and the company as a whole. This month, we have chosen two charities to highlight.

BET + United Way COVID-19 Relief Fund
The health and financial devastation wrought by COVID-19 is disproportionately affecting Black Americans. BET has established a COVID-19 Relief Fund in partnership with United Way to support and amplify relief efforts in communities that have been severely impacted by the pandemic. You can find out more about the fund and watch performances from the SOS Relief Effort show here

The Black AIDS Institute
The Black AIDS institute is a uniquely and unapologetically Black think and do tank powered by two decades of work to end the Black HIV epidemic, led by people who represent the issues they serve. BAI sources their capacity building, mobilization, policy, and advocacy efforts from Black leaders and communities across the country and provide high quality direct HIV services and linkage to care to Black people. You can learn more about BAI and donate at blackaids.org.
